Desperate Boris Johnson vows to carry on as PM as he tells voters 'I'm on your side'

Desperate Boris Johnson will tomorrow promise to flog cut-price homes and cut taxes as he tries to make voters believe him when he says: “I am on your side.”

After 148 Tory MPs tried to kick him out of office for breaking his own lockdown laws, the PM is frantically looking for ways to win back support.

In a speech tomorrow, he will declare his “ambition” to allow people in housing association properties to buy their homes at a big discount, copying Margaret Thatcher ’s 1980s right-to-buy scheme.

His plans include helping people access mortgage support, giving them incentives to save for a deposit and improving housing supply.

In his speech, Mr Johnson will bluster: “We have the tools we need to get on top of rising prices. The global headwinds are strong. But our engines are stronger.”

He today claimed “nothing and no one” would stop him carrying on in No10. But former Cabinet minister David Davis warned the PM to “get his act together” or leave office.

Rebel Tory MPs are plotting to rip up party rules to allow another confidence vote within six months.

They are trying to bring forward a vote on the make-up of the backbench 1922 executive to get more MPs on board critical of Mr Johnson.

One rebel told the Mirror: “His relationship with the party is like his relationship with his women. He’ll never leave but he’ll treat us so badly, lie to us, cheat on us, that we eventually have to kick him out.”

Another MP said that the Cabinet, who could collectively urge the PM to step down, were “spineless”.

At his first PMQs since the confidence vote, Mr Johnson tried to claim he had acquired enemies due to some “very big and very remarkable” achievements by his Government.

But Labour MP Angela Eagle asked: “If 148 of his own backbenchers don’t trust him, why on earth should the country?”

Mr Johnson is also trying to shore up support by promising to cut taxes amid the cost of living crisis.

Health Secretary Sajid Javid said: “I would like to see cuts where they’re possible.” The PM’s press secretary said: “We want to cut taxes as soon as it is possible to do so.”
