Ohio State football fans already don’t like Desmond Howard, considering he is one of the most accomplished alums from The Team Up North, but the now “College Gameday” football analyst is spitting some hot takes in regard to the Buckeye coaching staff.
On the Friday episode of ESPN’s “Get Up,” Howard mentioned that he felt that Ohio State head coach, Ryan Day, was on the hot seat. This is not a hot take and most college football pundits actually agree with this stance considering Day and the Buckeyes have dropped three games in a row to Michigan and failed to appear in the Big Ten title game.
The former Heisman Trophy winner then mentioned the hot portion of his take by claiming Ohio State has their back-up plan already, “They went out and hired Chip Kelly as offensive coordinator,” said Howard. “So if things go awry, I think they have somebody who’s behind… (proceeds to mess up name three times)… Ryan Day where they say, Chip Kelly can be the next coach too.”
I don’t think anyone wants Kelly to replace Day. I don’t think Kelly ever wants to be a head coach again. The two have a prior relationship from their days at New Hampshire and it is very clear that they respect each other immensely.
This is not a realistic back-up plan. Day is not a bad coach, the jury is still out on if he’s the coach that can get Ohio State over the hump and take it to the promised land, but it is hard to envision a scenario where Day gets canned and gets replaced with an aging Kelly whose greatest contributions to the game came long ago.
Desmond Howard suggests Ohio State could replace Ryan Day with Chip Kelly if 'things go awry' in 2024…
