Mid-century modern was one of the biggest interior design trends of 2023, and clearly, it shows no signs of slowing down. We've spotted the look in the beautiful homes of Nichole Richie, Mark Ruffalo, and Ariana Grande, and now there's another name to add to the list: Michael J. Fox.
The actor shared his living room on Instagram, and it's a mid-century modern masterpiece. In the space, a warm, neutral color scheme serves as a backdrop for natural materials like a marble fireplace, wooden armchairs, and an indoor tree. His space is full of art and textural accents. Interior design experts weigh in on what makes Michael J. Fox's neutral living room so appealing.
First, the beige living room color scheme helps to create warmth and soul in Michael's space.
'Warm Neutrals really took hold in 2023 and are set to continue their popularity into 2024,' comments design expert Ashleigh Ellis. 'The easy-to-adopt, minimalist aesthetic holds mass appeal while also reflecting the current home decor love affair with cream and inviting neutral interiors.' The look is a significant living room trend for a reason.
Ashleigh continues, 'Beige, creams, and warm whites are at the center of this trend, complemented by warm natural wood accents extending from cool bamboo tones to rich tans and deep oak colors.' We certainly see this in Michael's space, where beige upholstery compliments the rich tone of the flooring and living room carpet.
Interior designers also say that the living room fireplace helps create the sophisticated atmosphere of Michael's mid-century space. Taylor Lewis-Costa, Charlotte-based interior designer and owner of TLC Design, says, 'A stone fireplace greatly amplifies a room, particularly one with a muted, neutral color scheme.' She continues, 'In a neutral space, the stone elevates the room by adding complexity, and it directs the eyes to the anchor of the room.'
According to Taylor, the fireplace works because it adds 'contrast and texture' to the cozy living room. She states, 'If there is no contrast in color or variety with texture, the eyes are left wandering and the room can feel bland.' This is not the case in this space, where the textural carpet, marble fireplace, and black and white art add dimension.
The use of texture in interior design is essential in any neutral space. Ashleigh says, 'In order to add depth when working with a neutral colour palette, texture takes center stage with fabrics that you want to sink your hands into and stroke. Instead of block colors, cream textiles should be flecked through with a warmer richer colour. '
