Designers Say Kylie Jenner's Indoor-Outdoor Space is a Blueprint for Living in the 'In-Between' – it's so Seamless You can Hardly Tell Which is Which

Headshot of Kylie Jenner.

Indoor-outdoor living spaces really come into their own as the weather starts to improve, with the promise of longer, lighter evenings to spend in the backyard, with the doors flung open to the world. And Kylie Jenner's boundary-blurring space is the perfect way to embrace the best of both.

At first glance, the space in the below post appears to show off a part-covered outdoor seating area, but on closer inspection, you'll notice that it features upholstered furniture, wood flooring, and even a screen on the back wall, indicating that we're looking at an interior space with something of an 'invisible' barrier between indoors and out.

In part, this seamless look is down to the choice of modern, minimalist furniture, from the iconic pelican chairs (available from Wayfair) undercover, to the poolside chaise lounges (Walmart has similar), which blend beautifully with the clean lines and neutral palette of the modernist architecture both indoors and out.

I've tracked down some expert tips on how to create a cohesive look between interior and exterior spaces, and included a round-up of pieces that tap into Kylie Jenner's modern minimalist aesthetic, below. Let's dive in, shall we?

By sticking to a similar style of indoor and outdoor furniture, Kylie Jenner's space tricks the eye and makes it difficult to differentiate between the two spaces. Elisha Niebuhr, Founder and CEO of Modern Interior Company, explains: 'What I find so compelling about this space is that it’s really designed for living in the in-between. It’s not a hard line from interior to patio anymore.'

A similar effect can be achieved with covered patio ideas, such as open-sided structures, which can help to blur the boundaries between indoors and out whilst providing some protection from the elements. Alternatively, glass sliding doors can create the look of a seamless frame to the outdoors.

In the case of Kylie Jenner's space, Elisha explains why this works: 'There’s a gradual transition: a covered open-air room, flooring that feels more architectural and interior-minded, and furniture that looks like it belongs in a living room rather than outside.' And Elisha believes that's why we find it so appealing. 'It supports the way we live now – wanting beauty, comfort, and fresh air, but also wanting spaces that work for real life, whether that’s having dinner, answering emails, or just taking a moment to breathe,' she adds.

Kylie has created clearly defined seating areas, which are free from the barriers of internal walls and windows, for a modern and innovative open-plan living room idea. 'What really softens the boundary here is the furniture, adds Elisha. 'The forms feel soft, minimal, and sculptural – more like interior pieces than traditional patio furniture – so they could work indoors or out.'

The minimalist, monochrome furniture creates a cohesive scheme from the patio to the lounge space, and clever additions, such as the swinging daybed, which feels more like an outdoor feature than an indoor one, all work to challenge our perception of the space. Elisha agrees: 'Combined with a consistent neutral palette inside and out, the whole space takes on that seamless, luxurious feeling of living in the in-between.'
