Derry 'Ironman' Danny Quigley to be granted Freedom of City at a special ceremony

A Derry man who completed 10 Ironman challenges in a row last summer and raised over £100,000 is to be awarded the Freedom of the City next week.

Danny Quigley took on the challenge last year to mark the 10-year anniversary of his father Colm’s passing from suicide on March 23, 2011.

Deputy Mayor of Derry and Strabane Christopher Jackson confirmed the news on Wednesday (May 18).

The Waterside Sinn Féin councillor said: “I was delighted to propose a motion to the Council last November that we should recognise Danny Quigley’s incredible feat of ten Ironman races in ten consecutive days by granting him the Freedom of the City.

“Danny’s achievement really captured the imagination of the entire region and inspired so many of us.

"He raised over £100,000 for local charities as well as a huge amount of awareness around mental health and the importance of sport and physical activity in promoting a healthy body and mind.

“Through the Danny Quigley Fund, he continues to build on this incredible legacy, providing vital help to people throughout the North West.

“It is only right that we recognise this remarkable feat and we will do so with a special Council meeting on Monday when Danny is conferred with his latest achievement – the Freedom of the City.”

Meanwhile, the An Chroi Community Hub in the Top of The Hill area of the city has won a Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) Award.

The hub won an award for its benefit to its local community.

The Top of the Hill Community Centre, as it was previously known, was constructed in the 1970s and was located on the Bard Hill Road in Gobnascale. The centre was demolished in 2011 due to poor accessibility and condition.

This new community centre includes a creche, youth wing, training spaces and a multi-purpose hall encircling a central communal courtyard.

The centre creates a focal point or gateway to a wider set of developments.

Michael Hannaway FRICS, Chair of the judging panel, said: “These winning projects are a true testament to the hard work of property professionals in Northern Ireland.

“The teams behind them have worked tirelessly and with incredible vision to create projects which provide tremendous benefit across a diverse range of areas."
