Derry Girls viewers in awe as Liam Neeson stars in first episode of Channel 4 show

Derry Girls is finally back on our television screens, and it was no shock that the first episode was full of hilarious one-liners and sheer relatability.

But one surprise was the introduction of one amazing guest star - Liam Neeson!

The 'Taken' star made a cameo appearance as a Royal Ulster Constabulary officer who questions the Derry Girls about their involvement in a robbery at their Catholic girls' school, Our Lady Immaculate College.

But he gets more than he bargained for when Erin turns the tables and starts to interrogate him about the lack of Catholic officers in his police force.

The gang called upon the only force they had to wear someone down - the ever-boring Uncle Colm - and ended up getting out Scot-free!

According to Derry Girls' creator Lisa McGee, the cast and crew had a code name for Neeson during the shoot to help keep his cameo under wraps — 'the big fella’.

She tweeted: "Thanks for watching lads! Our code name for Liam during the shoot was ‘ the big fella’ arguably quite an easily cracked code. What an honour to have him in our wee show. Our very own Northern Star."

Fans replied to Lisa's tweet with their praise for the show, with one Twitter user writing: "What a super return Lisa - the only thing my 15-yr-old Bangor girl will watch with me.

"And what a coup in the form of 'the big fella'. Fan-bloody-tastic show. Forgot how good it is. Love it!"

Another said: "It was so utterly believable! There’s no winning an argument with a teenage girl who has an answer for everything and vaguely knows her rights. I speak from experience (for the tape)"

And a third wrote: "Cracking watch. Kevin McAleer is something else. He didn't mention the Clove Rock in this episode. I last seen him live in the Ardhowen. Cheers Lisa."

Further comments read: "'Twas genius...everything from Seamus the cat..Liam Neeson as the RUC officer & Diego from Derry....I'm still laughing to myself this morning", and "Take a bow Lisa. You've done more for Derry than the peace process ever has. Maith thu."

Also in a photo posted on Twitter, Channel 4 star Jamie-Lee O'Donnell who plays Michelle, pouted for a photo alongside the blockbuster movie star.

The next episode of Derry Girls will air on Tuesday, April 19 at 9:15pm on Channel 4.
