Derry Girls star Leah O'Rourke says she feels 'liberated' ahead of Dancing With The Stars first elimination

Derry Girls star Leah O’Rourke has admitted the “worst that could happen has happened” on Dancing With The Stars – as the show faces its first celebrity elimination on Sunday.

The actress and her pro dance partner John Nolan are at the bottom of the leaderboard after scoring the lowest number of points last Sunday for their American Smooth dance.

The judges weren't pleased, and Brian Redmond even said Leah was “stepping with the stars”, with the couple only receiving ten points in total.

But Leah said she felt “liberated” going into the show this week ahead of the first elimination.

She said: “I think because of my negative feedback last week, I'm less nervous. The worst that could happen has happened. I'm bottom of the leaderboard, it makes me feel more liberated this week. There's a little bit less pressure this week. But I can only go out and do my best. I am really looking forward to this weekend.”

But Leah admitted John was upset with the judge’s harsh criticism last week.

She said: “I’m not a dancer and I respect their opinions. It would be harder if it was a talent that I really had, and they were telling me I wasn’t good. Like I know I’m not the best.

“Yeah, John was upset, and he did feel they were harsh on me and he stood up for me, which was so so lovely.”

But she said the Derry Girls’ cast have been so supportive since she joined the show, with producer Lisa McGee really wanting to come to a show to see her dance.

She said: “The cast have been so lovely. Siobhan McSweeney and Lisa McGee have Tweeted wishing me luck. Jamie Lee and Nicola have come out and wished me luck. I was very, very good friends with Becky Henderson who played Aisling in the show and they've been so, so supportive. And Lisa really wants to go to a show, so I need to try to stay in on Sunday so she can come to a show,” she added.

Dancing With The Stars continues this Sunday on RTE One at 6:30pm.
