Derry Girls' Jamie-Lee O'Donnell refuses to unveil her true age during awkward interview

Derry Girls star Jamie-Lee O'Donnell hit back after she was asked a 'misogynistic question' by Late Late Show host Ryan Tubridy on RTE on Friday night.

The actress, who plays Michelle Mallon on the hit Channel 4 sitcom, hit back during the awkward moment in the interview as she spoke about her experience of filming the third and final series of Derry Girls.

The much-loved star, who hails from Derry herself and is 30, lifted the lid on what it was like to act alongside legendary Irish actor Liam Neeson after he made an unexpected cameo in the first episode of the new series.

While Jamie-Lee was happy to share some behind-the-scenes details of the show, there was one question that she was not willing to give an answer to.

After host Ryan Tubridy quizzed the actress on her age, she insisted she felt no need to share her age with Derry Girls.

Jamie-Lee tried to serve the question by joking that she's '117-years-of-age' before adding that she didn't want to respond.

The Derry Girls star shut down the question as she insisted that it had 'misogynistic undertones'.

She went on to insist that if she were a man, she would never be asked how old she is.

In a bid to explain himself, Late Late Show host Ryan said that he would still have asked the same question if he were interviewing a male actor.

However, Jamie-Lee hit back by claiming that there was no way that Ryan could prove his case due to the fact there were no male actors present.

Things then took a turn for the worst when Ryan attempted to explain that he had only asked Jamie-Lee her age due to the fact she is a lot older in real life compared to the teenage character she plays on Derry Girls.

After seemingly gauging that Jamie-Lee wasn't having any of his explanation, Ryan hastily insisted he would 'move on' and change the subject.

Following the awkward interaction, Late Late Show viewers flocked to Twitter to share their reactions.

"When someone tells you they find your question misogynistic - please listen to them next time. Instead of mansplaining that you’re not like that. That was rude," one viewer penned.

"That was the most awkward thing I have seen so far in 2022," another joked.

"Ryan Tubridy should know better than to mess with Michelle from Derry Girls," someone else mocked.

Meanwhile, a fourth viewer suggested that Ryan's question was 'only normal'.

"It's not really that big of deal though is it? She's in the public eye and people want to know how old she is. His question was only normal," they tweeted.

Derry Girls continues on Tuesday at 9.15PM on Channel 4.
