Derry Girls: Fans left 'sobbing' as series says emotional goodbye

Fans were left "sobbing" after Derry Girls came to an emotional end in an action-packed special episode. The coming-of-age sitcom aired its series finale on Tuesday night before a 'one year later' 60-minute bonus episode on Wednesday which saw the gang together for one last Derry-shaped hurrah.

The show has been hugely well received since Erin, Orla, Michelle, Clare and 'the wee English fella' James first appeared on our screens in 2018, winning plaudits from critics across the globe before creator Lisa McGee confirmed the third season would be the "last adventure" for the gang.

Set against the backdrop of Troubles-era Derry in the 1990s, the series has featured many memorable moments, and Wednesday's bonus episode was no different. You can get more TV news and other story updates by subscribing to our newsletters here.

Fans were left in hysterics within the first five minutes which saw Orla dancing down the streets of Derry with a group of young children in tow - with some even calling for her to get her own version of Ireland's famous Riverdance.

Their delight quickly turned to dismay when Michelle ditches Erin's party after the pair have a fight, fans were left unable to cope.

Others were quick to point out the Mean Girls similarities with the gang struggling to stay on the right phone lines, leading to some hilarious mix-ups and slips of the tongue.

Thankfully the gang reunited for some fantastic scenes and some (brilliantly) cringeworthy dancing from Gerry, Uncle Colm and a cracking cameo from Father Ted's Ardal O'Hanlon. The episode also saw the gang come to terms with the historic Good Friday Agreement, which brought long-awaited peace to Northern Ireland in 1998 after years of violence and instability.

The fear and uncertainty about what lies ahead was beautifully summed up in Erin's monologue about being scared to grow up. But it was the final scene, where a letter sent by the gang to Chelsea Clinton in season two, was finally read by Clinton herself on her doorstep in a thrilling full circle for long-time fans of the show.

Derry Girls creator Lisa McGee previously spoke about sending Clinton a letter when she was younger, and the famous daughter of Hillary Clinton's fitting cameo was not lost on fans.

When it came to the big question of whether James and Erin would get together after their kiss earlier in the series, fans were left wanting more. One user on Twitter said: "Upset there was no finally jerin [James and Erin] kiss BUT omg it was so cute and poignant. I'm gonna miss them all so much."

Above all, the end of the road for the gang - played out over the historic passing of the Good Friday Agreement and The Cranberries' anthem Dreams (what else?) - was simply too much for fans to bear.

While it might be the last we see of Erin and co for now, the show has won over many hearts in the past three years, and its finale was nothing less than what its legion of fans would have expected.
