Derry Girls actress Diona Doherty's new play 'Bridesmaids of Northern Ireland' is perfect for a girly night out in Belfast

Give My Head Peace and Derry Girls actress Diona Doherty has announced her first solo written comedy play which will make the perfect girly night out.

Tickets are now on sale for 'Bridesmaids of Northern Ireland' which will take place from October 17 to 22 at the Grand Opera House in Belfast, before going on a two-week regional tour ending in Derry.

The cast is made up of Diona herself along with Kerri Quinn, known for starring in Coronation Street and also Jayne Weisner, who appeared in The Inbetweeners.

Speaking to Be, the Derry actress told us what to expect.

Diona said: "I had written Bridesmaids of Northern Ireland in 2019 taking inspiration from the huge hit that was the movie Bridesmaids but set it in NI and around Northern Irish humour and Northern Irish identity.

"It's about this bride in her 30s and her two best friends, her old best friend and her new best friend from work are at each other's throats the whole way through the planning of the wedding, the hen do, the engagement party and at the ceremony.

"It's a story of friendship and just the funny characters that you meet in NI. It is a three person play but there are a lot of characters who are in the show and you don't actually meet them.

"I always had an ambition to write a play and put something on the main stage at the Opera House, it is like the most prestigious venue in the North, it is every actor and writer's dream here to perform on that stage.

"I am so lucky to have got the cast that we have. Kerri and Jayne are both so brilliant and so funny, I can't actually believe [it]. I am so grateful that they jumped on board straight away and they loved the script as well."

The comedian added: "I'm really excited, it's a real night out show. It's perfect for groups of girls, and guys, on a proper night out. Have a couple of drinks, go and see the show, go out after dancing.

"I got married five years ago and I'd have absolutely loved to have went with my bridesmaids to something like this.

"I've been a bride, I've been a bridesmaid and a maid of honour and they're the three roles in the show. I've brought my perspective for all three.

"I think you'll watch the show if you've been any of those and think, 'Oh my god, that's so true. That is what happens'.

"It's all the drama that is so common leading up to a wedding, but I like to think I've tied it up with a nice ending that's a reflection of friendship."
