Derry City sign striker Colm Whelan from UCD

Collie Whelan is determined to get back on the goal trail with his new club Derry City.

The former Ireland Under-21 star makes the switch to the Candystripes from UCD on a two-year deal.

Whelan suffered a cruciate injury in May, in College’s league win away to relegation rivals Finn Harps and missed the rest of the season.

At the time, the striker was linked with a number of English clubs including Lincoln City and also Shamrock Rovers.

But sharp-shooter Whelan - who scored 44 times in 66 games for UCD - is determined to get back to his best with Derry City and said: "I can't wait to get started.

“I can promise supporters a lot of hard work and hopefully a lot of goals.

"I watched the FAI Cup final and was really impressed by what Derry and their fans did that weekend."

“I've only played once at the Brandywell so far- a 7-1 defeat- so I'll have to make sure there are many better nights than that one."

In 2021, Whelan smashed 27 goals for club and country and Derry boss Higgins believes he can put his injury nightmare behind him and rediscover his best form.

Higgins said: "We’re delighted to welcome Colm to the club as he’s a player with an extremely bright future in the game.

"He has a lot of games under his belt at such a young age and has a fantastic goal scoring record.

"Myself and the staff are really excited to get working with Colm and helping him develop further at Derry City."
