Former Rangers star Derek McInnes believes current boss Gio van Bronckhorst is content with his squad despite criticism over a lack of late action.
The Ibrox boss signed Ridvan Yilmaz, Malik Tillman, John Souttar, Tom Lawrence, Rabbi Matondo, Ben Davies and Antonio Colak but did not dip into the market after securing a first appearance in the Champions League group stage for 12 years. That decision was met with a mixed response from supporters and it's in sharp focus in the wake of Rangers' 4-0 trouncing at the hands of Celtic on Saturday. But McInnes believes it's time to show faith in the Dutchman's nous to secure telling results on the Continent once again. Rangers travel to Amsterdam to take on Ajax on Wednesday night and the Europa League finalists are aiming to lean on the experience gained amid their rousing run to Sevile.
But the Kilmarnock boss sensed his counterpart was content with the business concluded by van Bronckhorst when the pair met at Ibrox last month. Speaking in the Mail on Sunday , McInnes said: "Europa League finalists last year, the current Rangers team has shown itself to be more capable of dealing with the European stage than we ever were. That's why Rangers fans shouldn't be too concerned that Giovanni van Bronckhorst did not go out and spend big on transfer deadline day.
"I've no doubt there was work going on behind the scenes to try and secure a last-minute addition. Qualification for the Champions League has helped the financial situation but sometimes you can end up signing players for the sake of it. Rangers got a lot of business done early this summer. And during a brief chat after Kilmarnock's visit to Ibrox last month, I got the sense that Giovanni was quite happy with the shape of his squad.
"Since then, they have eliminated PSV Eindhoven to qualify for the Champions League and they have reason to be confident going into their first game against Ajax. Ajax won the Dutch league by only two points from PSV last season and that suggests the level won't be too different.
"There will be no surprises for Giovanni and his staff, which is an obvious advantage, and these games will be so crucial if Rangers are to have any hope of progression from a section that also includes Liverpool and Napoli."
