Ex- Rangers midfielder Derek Ferguson has questioned his former club's decisions in the transfer market by claiming their form is down to the failure to back Giovanni van Bronckhorst.
Rangers signed seven players in the summer, with their marquee signing being the arrival of Ridvan Yilmaz in defence alongside the permanent captures of Tom Lawrence, Ben Davies, John Souttar and Antonio Colak amongst others. Yet despite their activity in the market, the departures of Leon Balogun, Joe Aribo and Calvin Bassey have severely weakened Rangers in key areas, alongside the experience of Aaron Ramsey with the Welshman's loan spell expiring despite the move not flourishing as fans may have hoped.
With a 4-0 loss in the Old Firm derby being followed up by a 4-0 loss at Ajax, fans would have hoped for a better end to the game against Napoli under the lights at Ibrox; but their fears were alleviated when Luciano Spalletti's men flew back to Italy with three points to leave the Light Blues with zero points from their opening two games in the Champions League. And Ferguson, father of former Aberdeen star Lewis, has questioned the board for failing to back the Dutchman ahead of the new season.
He said on Open Goal : "Would you be happy with two 4-0 and a 3-0 defeat in your last three games? As a Rangers manager or even a Celtic manager, of course you're under pressure because you're expected to win games.
"You're excepted to be competitive. He's got to do better, and this is why a couple of weeks ago when he (Van Bronckhorst) said he was happy with his squad, we were all scratching our heads.
"We thought 'no, you can always improve, you always look to improve', and I cannot understand why they didn't go into the market. I don't know whether it's if the board are holding them back in terms of giving them the financial clout behind them, but they should have. The squad is not good enough to be at the Champions League level at the minute."
