Depression may affect the brain in ways that go beyond mood and behavior. A new study has found evidence that the process of forming new neurons in the adult hippocampus becomes disrupted in people with major depressive disorder.
Researchers analyzed nearly half a million brain cells and found that the development of new neurons appeared to stall at certain stages in people with major depressive disorder. They also identified changes in gene regulation, cellular stress, immune signaling and communication between neurons.
