Deontay Wilder refuses to accept Tyson Fury didn't cheat in heavyweight rematch

Deontay Wilder is refusing to put aside his rivalry with Tyson Fury and still believes the Brit cheated by tampering his gloves in their rematch.

Fury won Wilder's heavyweight title in their rematch two years ago by knocking him out after they fought to a controversial draw in 2018. After the fight, Wilder accused Fury of loading his gloves with "egg weights" and labelled him as "one of the biggest cheats in boxing". Their rivalry seemed dead and buried when Fury knocked out the American in their trilogy fight last October, but Wilder is not letting bygones be bygones.

“It’s just like you got analysts that say ‘If he did have something in his glove why did you not go to the authorities?’” Wilder told Fight Hype. “I wish I was in front of them [the analysts] and I would grab their collar and put them close to my face so we can be eye to eye, face to face, so much that my breath touch their face, and I would tell them, ‘Why the f*** would I go to the authorities when I have an opportunity to release my own energy and put my hands up on on him in the possibility of trying to kill him and get paid millions of dollars doing it.’ Why would I go to the authorities?”

“Go to the authorities and they lock him up, then what’s next?” That’s it. A good write-up. Ok, we proved our case. Nobody getting fed. What justice has that done? That don’t make no sense. That sounds like somebody is non-confrontational, that [isn't involved] in combat sports because their mindset is not set on combat. It’s set on being nice, that theory don’t even make sense to me. We are in the hurt business. This is what we do. I can hurt you and get paid doing it. That sounds like a sweet deal to me.”

Fury rubbished Wilder's cheating claims and said his trainer at the time, Jay Deas, watched his hands being wrapped for the rematch. "Jay Deas was in the room when I had my hands wrapped; he examined them, he was in there when I had my gloves put on, and examined them - everyone else in the room too, they don't leave, we know this. Everybody citing foul play, bulls***; and next time I'll put a dent in his boxing career and end it because it will be two knockout losses in a row and bye, bye forever," Fury said.

Wilder will return to the ring for the first time since his consecutive losses to Fury next month as he faces former sparring partner Robert Helenius in New York. Fury insists he is not retired and is currently negotiating a deal to face domestic rival Anthony Joshua after talks of an undisputed clash against Oleksandr Usyk collapsed.
