Food authorities in Denmark have issued a recall for three types of spicy instant noodle products imported from South Korea due to potential risks of “acute poisoning.” Consumers are advised to either dispose of the noodles or return them to the retailer.
The recalled noodles, manufactured by Seoul-based Samyang Foods, a major South Korean company with global reach, include Buldak Samyang 3 x Spicy & Hot Chicken, Buldak Samyang 2 x Spicy & Hot Chicken, and Buldak Samyang Hot Chicken Stew.
The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration raised concerns that these products contain an excessive amount of capsaicin, a compound found in chili peppers that can act as a neurotoxin and pose health hazards if consumed in high doses.
Reports indicated that children and teenagers in Denmark have been engaging in social media challenges involving the consumption of these extremely spicy noodles, prompting the authorities to take action to prevent potential cases of acute poisoning.
Henrik Dammand Nielsen of the Danish Food and Drug Administration highlighted the risks posed by the high capsaicin content, which could lead to symptoms such as burning sensations, discomfort, nausea, vomiting, and elevated blood pressure, particularly in children, frail adults, and the elderly.
In response to the recall, Samyang acknowledged that the decision was not related to product quality but rather concerns over the spiciness of the noodles and their potential health implications. The company stated that while these noodles are sold globally, this was the first instance of a recall being issued in any market.
Spicy food challenges have been popular for years, with individuals daring each other to consume exceptionally hot dishes. However, recent incidents, such as the tragic death of a Massachusetts teen who participated in a spicy tortilla chip challenge, have underscored the serious risks associated with extreme spiciness.
The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration emphasized the importance of parental awareness regarding these extreme noodle varieties and advised avoiding them to prevent health complications.
