Denmark midfielder conscious after collapsing on pitch during World Cup friendly

MIDFIELDER Christian Eriksen is conscious after he collapsed during Denmark's friendly against Ukraine, the Danish Football Association (DBU) has said.

Footage of the game showed Eriksen grabbing his chest before collapsing during the second half, at around 65 minutes, and the match was abandoned.

Eriksen previously collapsed during a European Championship match in Copenhagen in 2020 and was given life-saving CPR treatment.

He was then fitted with a heart-starting device known as an Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator (ICD).

The national-team doctor Morten Boesen gave an update to fans, stating: "Christian is doing well and walked off the pitch by himself.

He added. "As I see it, the pacemaker responded as it should.

"He was briefly unconscious, but regained consciousness very quickly and we were quickly in contact with him.

"He will undergo further examinations at the hospital to determine what caused the incident. We are in ongoing contact with him and the doctors at the hospital.

"But, Christian is doing well and asked me to send his regards to all the players and tell them he was okay."

"Christian Eriksen is conscious and is doing well under the circumstances," the federation added in a ‌statement on Twitter/X.

He was contracted to Inter Milan at the time but Serie A rules prevented players being able to play in the league with a pacemaker and the midfielder resumed his career at Brentford in 2022 before he enjoyed a three-year spell at Manchester United.

He joined Wolfsburg last summer.
