The Danish FA have confirmed that Christian Eriksen is “conscious and doing well” after collapsing during a friendly match against Ukraine.
The former Tottenham and Manchester United midfielder, who now plies his trade in Germany with Wolfsburg, suffered the same fate at the European championships in 2021 as Denmark faced Finland in the group stage. He was later confirmed to have suffered cardiac arrest and had a defibrillator surgically implanted.
Now 34, he collapsed again late on during Denmark’s friendly meeting with Ukraine, but walked off the pitch under his own steam and has been taken to hospital.
Footage of the incident appears to show Eriksen clutching at his chest before falling to the ground in front of the substitutes’ bench. He was attended to by medical staff almost immediately as players from both teams surrounded him to shield the view of the fans and broadcast cameras.
The match was postponed with 25 minutes remaining, and a statement from the Danish Football Federation confirmed: “Christian Eriksen is conscious and, according to the circumstances, doing well. The match is called off.”
Denmark’s team doctor Morten Boesen added in a further statement: "Christian is doing well and walked off the field himself. As I see it, the pacemaker responded as it should.
“He was briefly unconscious, but regained consciousness very quickly and we were quickly in contact with him.
“He will now undergo further examinations at the hospital to determine what caused the incident. We are in ongoing contact with him and the doctors at the hospital.
“But Christian is doing well, and he asked me to send his regards to all the players and tell them that he was okay.”
Eriksen received treatment on the pitch for 13 minutes after collapsing at Euro 2020. He was resuscitated and defibrillated on the pitch.
He had been representing Inter Milan at the time and after taking some time away from football, signed with Brentford in 2022. He then spent three seasons with Manchester United before moving to Wolfsburg last summer.
