Demonstrators rally at Supreme Court over major abortion pill case

Demonstrators gathered Tuesday at the U.S. Supreme Court, which began hearing oral arguments in a case on the abortion pill mifepristone, whose popularity has surged since the high court overturned Roe v. Wade.

Why it matters: Medication abortions accounted for the majority of abortions in the U.S. last year, per the Guttmacher Institute, and the court's ruling expected in June could restrict access to mifepristone.

  • Justices began hearing arguments at 10am ET in the case, which is the first to directly address abortion access since the 2022 Dobbs decision.
  • If the justices agree with an appeals court decision limiting access to mifepristone — which has remained widely available while the case is being argued— even states that haven't restricted abortion access would be affected.
