Demolition work has begun on the former maternity buildings at Ayrshire Central Hospital in Irvine to pave the way for a new residential housing development.
The building on Kilwinning Road has been closed for more than a decade. North Ayrshire Council bought the site from the NHS in March 2021 and was granted permission to start works back in December 2022.
The site includes the former maternity residences building and two gate lodges which are Category B listed.
Continued vandalism and fire-raising have worsened the condition of the maternity unit at Ayrshire Central Hospital, therefore due to ongoing security and safety concerns the razing of the entire creepy site was required.
A demolition plan, which will include asbestos removal, has been drawn up to safely level the building which has a combination of one, two and three-storey blocks with flat roofs, round tower stairwells and external fire escapes.
Ayrshire Central is a major residential development which aims to bring the area of surplus land on the former hospital site back into productive use.
It is intended that the buildings will be torn down to make way for a 202 home development which would include one, two three and four-bedroomed properties.
The development will include a mix of general needs properties along with homes for wheelchair users and amenity bungalows to meet a wide range of residents’ needs.
North Ayrshire Council will also hold an open consultation next month on June 6, where they will unveil the draft plans for the site. Followed by the final plan consultation.
The works on new development won't start until next year according to North Ayrshire Council.
