Democrats Score Downballot Wins In North Carolina Elections

State Sen. Jeff Jackson, D-Mecklenburg, Democratic candidate for North Carolina Attorney General, speaks at a campaign event for Democratic presidential nominee Vice President Kamala Harris in

Despite falling short in the presidential election, Democrats in North Carolina secured significant downballot victories, offering hope for the future. While Donald Trump won the state over Vice President Kamala Harris, Democrats celebrated wins in races for governor, attorney general, and the legislature.

North Carolina, a closely divided state where conservatives have historically dominated, saw Democrats triumph in key races. Governor Roy Cooper praised the quality of Democratic candidates who ran against right-wing extremists, emphasizing that the people of North Carolina made the right choices.

Attorney General Josh Stein's victory over Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson highlighted the Democrats' success. Stein's campaign focused on fundraising and highlighting Robinson's controversial statements on various issues. Democrats have now won eight of the last nine gubernatorial elections in the state.

Democrats also flipped the lieutenant governor's office and the state school superintendent's position, defeating Republicans with controversial backgrounds. While Republicans maintained control in some areas, Democrats made significant gains in downballot races.

Despite challenges at the national level, North Carolina Democrats found reasons to celebrate. The state's history of ticket-splitting continued, with voters comfortable with Democrats at the state level but cautious about national Democratic policies.

Looking ahead to 2024, both parties are strategizing for future success. While Republicans point to their victories, Democrats are focused on building on their recent wins. The upcoming 2026 elections will be crucial for both parties as they plan their next moves.

Overall, Democrats in North Carolina are optimistic about the future, recognizing the need for continued hard work and strategic planning. The recent victories have energized the party, setting the stage for future electoral success.
