Democratic organizations are preparing a large election-monitoring effort ahead of the November midterms, with state parties working to recruit roughly 10,000 volunteers. The planned deployment is intended to provide a presence near polling locations and respond if federal officers, including armed personnel, are seen at voting sites, according to an Associated Press report published Sept. 14.
The effort, called the "New Battlefield Project," lands around six months after a Trump administration official flatly denied that ICE would ever be present at polling sites — and two weeks after the sitting DHS secretary described a scenario in which it could be. For Latino voters already facing rhetoric linking undocumented immigration to voter fraud, the gap between those two statements is now driving a nationwide organizing push.
