Democratic Senators Disagree With Biden's 'Garbage' Comment

U.S. President Joe Biden attend an event honoring the legacy of late U.S. Senator John McCain in Tempe

President Biden's recent comments referring to supporters of former President Trump as 'garbage' have ignited a political controversy, particularly impacting Democratic Senate candidates in key swing states where Trump enjoys popularity. Several Democratic senators and candidates have distanced themselves from Biden's remarks, emphasizing their commitment to representing all constituents regardless of their political affiliations.

Wisconsin Sen. Tammy Baldwin's campaign spokesman stated that Baldwin does not agree with President Biden's comments and is dedicated to fighting for all Wisconsinites, irrespective of their political preferences. Similarly, Nevada Sen. Jacky Rosen, Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown, and Arizona Senate candidate Ruben Gallego have expressed their disagreement with disparaging individuals based on their voting choices.

Montana Sen. Jon Tester's spokesperson highlighted Tester's pride in receiving support from Montanans across the political spectrum, including those who back Donald Trump. Pennsylvania Sen. Bob Casey's campaign spokesperson emphasized Casey's respect for all Pennsylvanians, regardless of their voting patterns.

Democratic Rep. Elissa Slotkin, a Senate candidate from Michigan, also criticized Biden's comments, labeling them as inappropriate and unnecessary in political discourse. While most Democrats disapproved of Biden's language, some, like Gallego and Brown, have previously made derogatory remarks about Trump supporters.

Biden's comments were made during a virtual campaign call with Voto Latino, where he criticized former President Trump's rally at Madison Square Garden and condemned the disparaging jokes made by a comedian. The White House later clarified that Biden was referring to the hateful rhetoric at the rally as 'garbage' and was not labeling Trump supporters as such.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre reiterated that Biden's intention was not to insult Trump supporters and emphasized the need for clarity on his remarks. Vice President Kamala Harris also distanced herself from Biden's comments, emphasizing her strong disagreement with criticizing individuals based on their voting preferences.
