Delegates at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago's United Center are set to partake in a ceremonial roll call on Tuesday to honor Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz. The 57 delegations will deliver speeches and cast symbolic votes during this event.
The roll call will commence with President Joe Biden's home state of Delaware and conclude with California and Minnesota, the respective home states of Harris and Walz. Organizers have designed these details to emphasize the significance of this transition of leadership.
Although Harris officially secured the party's nomination earlier through a virtual roll call, the in-person votes on Tuesday will serve as a poignant moment for the Democratic Party. Following a period of intense internal strife, which saw Biden withdraw from the 2024 race in July and Harris swiftly clinch the nomination, many Democrats view this week as a much-needed celebratory occasion.
It is worth noting that there was no in-person roll call during the previous convention four years ago when Biden was the presumptive nominee. The Covid-19 pandemic necessitated a predominantly virtual format for that event.
