Dementia has climbed to the fifth leading cause of death in the world, according to new estimates released Oct. 2 by the World Health Organization. Global deaths from dementia tripled between 2000 and 2023, and the condition moved from 19th place to fifth over that period.
Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia killed 2.1 million people in 2023, and women accounted for 66% of those deaths, according to WHO's updated top 10 causes of death fact sheet.
