After the San Francisco 49ers lost to the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC title game on Sunday, defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans is available to be hired as a head coach candidate this week.
Reports emerged last Thursday that Ryans is “a top candidate” for the Denver Broncos’ head coach opening. One day later, similar reports emerged for the Texans, with Houston setting up an interview for this week.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Sunday morning that Ryans is “considered the favorite” for the Texans’ job. He had an in-person interview with the Broncos on Jan. 19, but if all goes well in his second meeting with Houston, Ryans likely won’t get a second meeting with Denver.
If Ryans is hired by the Texans, the Broncos will have to continue their search for a new head coach to replace Nathaniel Hackett. Jim Harbaugh apparently might still be in play, but he has publicly stated that he plans to stay at the University of Michigan.
What comes next for Denver is anyone’s guess.
