May NY world sugar #11 (SBK25) Friday closed down -0.12 (-0.66%), and May London ICE white sugar #5 (SWK25) closed down -0.90 (-0.17%).
Sugar prices Friday gave up an early advance and posted moderate losses on demand concerns. On Wednesday, NY sugar posted a 5-week low, and London sugar dropped to a 2-month low due to worries that demand for sugar would decline as the global trade war escalates and tariffs boost sugar prices for consumers. China raised tariffs on all US goods Friday to 125% from 84% in retaliation for the US raising tariffs on Chinese goods to 145%. Sugar prices initially moved higher Friday after the dollar index (DXY00) sank to a 3-year low, boosting most commodity prices.
