Delta to add nonbinary gender option for bookings

Delta Air Lines said it will add a nonbinary gender option for flight bookings later this year, becoming the third major carrier to provide a gender-neutral alternative and completing changes to its booking systems that the airline shelved during the pandemic.

Atlanta-based Delta said last week it will add the “X” gender marker encouraged by the Transportation Security Administration for ticket purchases on the airline’s website, mobile app and at other purchasing locations. The shift comes amid a Biden administration effort to expand LGBTQ protections and broader measures by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to be more inclusive of transgender, nonbinary and gender-nonconforming travelers.

United Airlines and American Airlines already allow nonbinary gender options for flight bookings. Delta, like many airlines, started working on changes to its booking systems a few years ago, but “shifted focus” due to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to Delta spokesman Morgan Durrant.

Durrant said Delta is now “back on track to be able to offer a nonbinary gender option in our booking systems in 2022.”

The shift by Delta and the federal government to offer more inclusive gender identifiers comes as several conservative state legislatures have debated and enacted laws that limit instruction about gender in public school classrooms, target gender-affirming treatments or ban participation by transgender girls in sports that correspond to their gender identity.

For now, nonbinary customers must select “M” or “F” when booking flights on Delta, but are still allowed through airport security checkpoints even if the gender on their boarding pass and ID do not match, according to the airline.

The airline faced criticism in January when a Twitter user recounted the experience of trying to buy a Delta ticket with an “X” gender marker and being told by a reservations agent that it wasn’t possible. The customer tweeted that the Delta policy “results in discriminatory treatment and is just bad business.”

Delta said in a statement that “we understand that being seen and acknowledged is part of having an equitable travel experience.” The airline is also now directing flight attendants to use gender-neutral language when greeting passengers, and allowing employees to choose male or female uniforms.

Beyond Delta, United and American, most other airlines allow customers to request changes in the gender listed on their tickets by contacting their customer contact centers, according to TSA.

Federal airport security agencies that cross-check flight bookings and government IDs are also making changes. TSA in February stopped using gender to validate travelers’ IDs at airport security checkpoints.

“When travelers appear at the travel document checker podium for identity verification, gender information is irrelevant in determining that a traveler may proceed into the screening area,” TSA said in an announcement last week.

And, the State Department will allow the “X” gender marker option on U.S. passports starting April 11.

DHS said airlines allowing the use of the “X” gender marker can “ensure more efficient and accurate passenger processing.”

TSA plans to eventually allow applicants for its PreCheck program to choose “X” as their gender, which it said “keeps pace” with IDs that allow the “X“ gender option.
