Delta Air Lines flight from Edinburgh to Boston declares mid-air emergency

A Scots flight to America has declared a mid-air emergency this afternoon.

The Delta Air Lines flight was travelling from Edinburgh to Boston when a 7700 squawk code was issued. The code signals an emergency onboard and the flight was quickly diverted to Shannon in Ireland.

The airline says the flight was diverted after experiencing a mechanical issue onboard. Images from flight tracker website flightrader24 showed the DAL123 airplane do a loop near Inveraray, before heading towards Ireland.

The flight, which was due to leave Edinburgh Airport at 11.55am, left the Scottish capital at 12.20pm. The airline say they will work quickly to accommodate and rebook passengers.

A spokesperson for Delta Air Lines said: "After experiencing a mechanical issue onboard, Delta flight 123 from Edinburgh to Boston was diverted to Shannon (SNN), where it made a routine landing.

"Delta teams on the ground worked quickly to accommodate and rebook passengers. We appreciate the actions of our teams as nothing is more important than the safety of our customers and flight crew, and we apologise to our passengers for the delay in their travels."

In a further update, they added: "Customers on Delta flight 123 on July 12 from Edinburgh to Boston, earlier safely diverted to Shannon, Ireland after a mechanical issue with the aircraft, are now being accommodated in hotels overnight near Dublin, the closest available and with ground transportation and meals provided.

"Customers will continue onto Boston tomorrow morning after transiting back to Shannon. Delta apologises to our customers for the delay in their travel plans. Representatives from Delta are contacting each customer with an additional apology.
