Delivery driver surrounded and attacked by armed gang

Four people assaulted a driver while he was delivering sofas after threatening him with weapons including a zombie knife and a hammer. Among the injuries he suffered during the terrifying attack was a punctured hand.

The victim was approached by Sarah Evans, 46, in Rhydyfelin, Pontypridd, on May 10 last year. She asked him if he needed directions. A sentencing hearing at Cardiff Crown Court heard Evans then opened the passenger door, climbed into the van, and tried to take a satchel.

The driver's door was opened and three men – Dorian Brown, 36, Jason Hall, 50, and Matthew Maher, 46 – demanded money from the driver. They were armed with a zombie knife, a hammer, and a screwdriver and took items from the van.

The victim was struck several times to the thigh and received a puncture wound to his hand. The defendants were later apprehended and Evans, Hall, and Maher, all of Rhydyfelin, and Brown, of Tonypandy, pleaded guilty to robbery. Hall, Maher, and Brown also pleaded guilty to assault with Brown also pleading guilty to possession of a knife.

Judge Paul Hobson sentenced Brown to seven years and one month imprisonment. Evans was sentenced to four years and nine months imprisonment. Hall was sentenced to seven years and six months imprisonment. Maher was sentenced to six years and nine months imprisonment.

After the hearing detective constable Jack Harris of South Wales Police said: “This was a completely unprovoked attack on a delivery driver who was just doing his job. Thanks to the CCTV and forensic inquiries made by detectives we were able to put together a strong case. They all deserve to be behind bars and I’m glad we’ve been able to deliver justice for the victim.”
