Deliveroo is launching “Collecteroo”, a mobile food collection service in partnership with the Trussell Trust.

It is backed by Nicola Adams, who has been named ambassador for this campaign.

The boxing Olympian has said: “I know how challenging it is for some families to put food on the table, and although they shouldn’t be needed, I’m so thankful that food banks are there to provide compassionate and practical relief.”

“They do an incredible job at helping people facing hardship, and now, more than ever, it is vital that people who can donate offer their support, where possible.

“That’s why I’m using my platform and my voice this Christmas to raise awareness around this important initiative from Deliveroo and the Trussell Trust.”

It comes just before Christmas at a time when households will be cutting back due to the rising cost of living. Barclaycard said 48% of people it surveyed between October 21 to 24 plan to spend less this Christmas, with 59% intending to buy less generous gifts and 42% cutting back on socialising.

What is Deliveroo’s new collection service and how will it work?

The new service, called ‘Collecteroo’, will have e-vans that collect unopened and in-date food items from people’s homes and deliver them to some of the food banks in the Trussell Trust’s nationwide network in London, Birmingham, Manchester, Glasgow, and Cardiff.

The initiative comes after research commissioned by Deliveroo revealed that 74% Brits have unopened food items in their cupboards that they would happily donate to food banks.

‘Collecteroo’ will help the Trussell Trust get closer to providing the 1.3 million emergency food parcels that they expect will be needed over the next six months.

This week, it was reported by Kantar Worldpanel that supermarket prices in October were 14.7% higher than a year earlier. Shoppers will continue to be hit by rising costs, and Colecteroo aims to help families struggling.

Danni Malone, director of betwork programmes and innovation at the Trussell Trust, said: “Food banks in the Trussell Trust network are facing their toughest winter yet and expect to distribute more than 1.3 million emergency food parcels over the next six months – more than half a million of these parcels will be for children.”

The food collections will start on December 12 in Manchester and end on December 17 in London. Those who wish to arrange a food collection from their home can apply via the microsite from today (November 9). Applications close on Monday, November 28.

The Deliveroo x the Trussell Trust Collecteroo service will help facilitate food donations in major cities by collecting from people’s doorsteps. This will enable more people to donate, including those physically unable to bring items to a supermarket donation point.

The Trussell Trust ensures that all of the food parcels provided by food banks in their network contain at least three days worth of nutritionally balanced meals.

Collecteroo is encouraging people to donate items such as:

  • Tinned fruit
  • Tinned meat or fish
  • Long-life milk
  • Tinned tomatoes
  • Tinned pasta sauce
  • Sponge or rice puddings
  • Long-life juice

Will Shu, CEO and Founder of Deliveroo, said: “Our partnership with the Trussell Trust has already provided 1.5 million meals to food banks and communities across the country, thanks to Deliveroo customers in the UK who have donated so far.

“Our research highlights that people have food in their cupboards that they would like to donate, so working closely with the Trussell Trust, our Collecteroo service will help make it easier for people to donate by connecting local residents to local food banks. Together with our consumers, we are committed to helping to tackle hunger across the UK.”
