Emphasising that women’s safety was “non-negotiable”, Lieutenant Governor TS Sandhu on Tuesday directed the Delhi Police to establish a dedicated ‘Pink Force’ comprising trained women personnel. The force will conduct high-visibility patrolling around schools, colleges, metro stations and other vulnerable areas across the national capital.
Speaking to senior Delhi Police officers at the police headquarters auditorium on Jai Singh Road, Sandhu said it should focus on creating a deterrent presence as well as ensuring a quick response, particularly during hours when women and other vulnerable groups may face greater risks.
Focus On Eve-Teasing And Public Harassment
The LG also called for continued targeted action against eve-teasing and harassment in public places under Operation Shishtachar.
More Patrolling In Crime-Prone Areas
The lieutenant governor directed the Delhi Police to increase both foot and motorcycle patrolling in crime-prone locations. Particular attention was sought around schools, colleges, markets and transport hubs.
“Every police station should be a place where citizens feel heard, helped and safe,” he said.
Traffic Management And CCTV Monitoring
On traffic management, Sandhu asked the police to identify congestion hotspots and ensure a visible police presence during peak traffic hours.
He also called for greater use of real-time monitoring through CCTV cameras and the Traffic Control Room to improve traffic management across the city.
Digital Tracking Of Public Complaints
The LG directed the police to introduce digital tracking of Jan Sunwai complaints, with clear timelines for action. He also stressed that complaints related to other government departments should be forwarded promptly to the appropriate authorities.
Schools To Conduct Child Safety Awareness Programmes
Sandhu also called for regular awareness programmes in schools covering the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences, child safety, cybercrime, substance abuse and road safety.
Focus On Police Welfare
On police welfare, the LG called for fixed-hour grievance hearings at police headquarters and timely promotions, with particular attention to personnel in lower ranks and women officers.
He also suggested developing police colonies as model zero-waste colonies as part of efforts to improve living conditions and promote better waste management.
Sandhu reiterated the need for zero tolerance towards corruption within the police force.
Praise For BRICS Summit Security Arrangements
The LG commended the Delhi Police and other security agencies for ensuring the smooth, secure and successful conduct of the BRICS Summit.
He said the experience gained during the event should be used to further improve preparedness and coordination for future international events.
