NEW DELHI: Delhi could be staring at power outage just when rising temperature is pushing up demand, with the Centre late on Wednesday evening allotting without any notice the entire 728 MW capacity of NTPC’s Dadri Stage-II power station to Haryana from April 1.
The sudden loss of such a large capacity, or 18% of Delhi’s consumption of about 4,100 MW on Wednesday, will be hard to replace with power from the exchanges where tariffs have risen to double digits. The exchanges may not have such a large capacity on offer round-the-clock and the sudden demand from Delhi will further harden tariffs. All this could lead to blackouts.
