Delhi: No heatwave for next 3-4 days, but temperature likely to go up

NEW DELHI: The city saw a slight rise in the daytime temperature on Saturday, thereby continuing the respite from heatwaves for the third day in a row, even as some areas recorded the maximum temperature over 41 degrees Celsius.

The weather department expects the respite from heatwaves to continue for three to four days. However, the mercury will keep rising. The heatwaves may return from April 28, with the maximum temperature likely to reach 44 degrees, the weather office said.

India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the maximum temperature was recorded at 39.5 degrees Celsius at the city’s base station, Safdarjung, two notches above the season’s average against 39.3 degrees Celsius a day earlier.

The minimum temperature was 20.6 degrees Celsius, three notches below the season’s average.

The humidity at Safdarjung oscillated between a maximum of 67% and a minimum of 17%.

Meanwhile, at 41.8 degrees Celsius, Siri Fort remained the warmest area of the city, followed by the Ridge at 41.4 degrees Celsius and Najafgarh at 41.2 degrees Celsius, respectively — all three notches above the season’s average.

“City is likely to see strong winds on Sunday at speed up to 25-35 kmph, which will allow only a slight rise in mercury levels,” said an IMD official.

The maximum and minimum temperatures may hover around 41 and 22 degrees Celsius on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the air quality of the city was in the “poor” category. On Saturday, the Air Quality Index (AQI), on a scale of 0 to 500, was recorded at 245 against 204 a day earlier.
