NEW DELHI: Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has informed National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) that the transgender signage for toilets, which was considered not acceptable by the community, has been removed.
DMRC also said the new signage for transgender person “[T]” as advised by the stakeholders is pending for approval of the competent authority. The report also specified that DMRC has designated a complaint officer under the Transgender Persons Act to deal with complaints relating to violations of provisions of the Act.
This came after NHRC issued a notice to DMRC on a complaint by Dr Aqsa Shaikh, an associate professor at Hamdard Institute of Medical Sciences and Research. In her complaint, which was lodged in September last year, Shaikh had stated that DMRC has wrongly used the word, ‘ubhaylingi’, for the toilets allocated for transgender persons, which indicates them as ‘bilingual’.
