Delhi: Brace for more heatwaves in the first part of next week

NEW DELHI: Heatwave conditions are likely to return from Monday to Wednesday and India Meteorological Department (IMD) has declared a "yellow" alert. There is a possibility of thundery development on Thursday under the influence of a western disturbance. The Met department said no station in the capital saw heatwave conditions on Saturday.

According to IMD, the maximum temperature was 40 degrees Celsius, three degrees above normal, at Safdarjung, the city's base station. Most of the stations recorded day temperatures in the range of 40-41 degrees Celsius, but none met the heatwave criteria. Sports Complex in east Delhi was the hottest station at 41.8 degrees Celsius, followed by Najafgarh at 41.4. Ridge at 41.3, Pitampura at 41.1, Ayanagar at 40.6, Palam at 40.3 and Lodhi Road at 40. The minimum temperature was 22 degrees Celsius, normal for the season. The relative humidity oscillated between 70% and 21%.

R K Jenamani, senior scientist at IMD, said, "Heatwave conditions are likely from Monday to Wednesday as the maximum temperature may reach 42 degrees Celsius." A Met official said that due to a western disturbance, the temperature might witness a marginal dip from April 21.
