A "parasitic twin" is a rare type of conjoined twin where one fetus develops normally while the other twin is severely underdeveloped and essentially "parasitic" on the healthy twin, meaning it is attached to the healthy twin but lacks the ability to function independently and relies on the other twin for survival; this underdeveloped twin is often referred to as the "parasite" while the healthy one is called the "autosite".
