NEW DELHI: A Civil Defence Volunteer was critically injured and his sister-in law is battling for her life after a sports utility vehicle rammed the motorcycle they were on in south Delhi’s Saket last Sunday. Hemant, 23, had to have his leg amputated.
“Our father passed away over a decade ago and our mother toiled to give us an education and help us reach this level. Now, in a second, everything has changed,” said Natasha, Hemant’s sister. “Our brother-in-law had hurt his hand and Hemant and our sister-in-law were going to get his bandaging done when the car hit the motorbike.”
Natasha said the family would like the accused to be severely punished, alleging that the driver not only crashed into them but reversed and ran over Hemant again.
The accused, Vipul Dhingra, was arrested three days after the incident. Police said they are investigating if he was drunk at the time of the incident or not. Dhingra was arrested on April 20 and his vehicle impounded. He works as a wholesaler dealer in Azadpur market.
The three persons riding the bike were Krishan Kumar, Meena and Hemant. Kumar and Meena were visiting relatives in Deoli, including Hemant, their cousin. They were going to Sonipat from Deoli Goan. Dhingra was headed home in Shalimar Bagh having dropped a friend in Malviya Nagar. He was alone in the car at the time of the accident.
Auto driver Ram Pravesh, 43, sustained a leg injury and was discharged from the hospital on the same day. Hemant lost his left leg below the knee. Meena is in coma and Kumar was discharged after treatment.
Benita Mary, DCP (South), said, “On April 17 around 4am, we received a call about an accident near the Saket Courts traffic lights. The police reached that spot to find a motorcycle and an auto-rickshaw damaged by the accident. The injured persons had been taken to AIIMS and police found that four people, including a woman, had been admitted. On inspecting the accident spot, a bumper of a car bearing the number plate was found. Based on the statement of an eyewitness, we registered a case and also invoked IPC Section 201 (causing disappearance of evidence) against the driver.”
