Deion Sanders Defends Broncos’ Sean Payton in Wake of 50-Point Loss

In the wake of Denver’s historic 50-point loss at the hands of Miami last Sunday, Broncos coach Sean Payton has been the butt of jokes, and the subject of much-deserved criticism with how poorly his team has performed over his first three games as the team’s coach.

Payton is a Super Bowl champion, and a proven winner as an NFL coach. Colorado coach Deion Sanders, who was an analyst for NFL Network before getting into college coaching, came to the defense of his friend earlier this week.

When a reporter asked a question to Sanders about personnel decisions for the Buffaloes in the second half of the Oregon game in a blowout, he insinuated it was similar to what Payton faced at the NFL level on Sunday. Sanders wasn’t having it.

“Hey, leave my guy alone. Leave my guy alone,” Sanders said of Payton. “I love the Broncos. I love their coach, and Sean Payton’s my guy. He’s going to get it right, I promise you that. I believe in Sean Payton.”

Sanders has already been to a Denver game earlier this year, sitting in a luxury suite with his sons while taking in early season Broncos action. Sanders knows what it’s like to face criticism as a coach, and knows what Payton is up against after the Broncos’ poor performance last weekend. He quickly came to Payton’s defense, showing a clear sign of support for his NFL counterpart in the face of adversity.
