The US defence department reportedly tried to block former secretary Mark Esper from revealing that Donald Trump had threatened to bomb Mexico to “take out the cartels”.

Pentagon officials were alarmed at the potential effect the revelation could have on the US-Mexico relations, CNN reported, citing sources familiar with the dispute.
