Decision on Shaheen Afridi's future as captain will be taken after national camp: PCB head Naqvi

NEW DELHI: Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Mohsin Naqvi has suggested that a verdict regarding Shaheen Shah Afridi's captaincy tenure in the T20 team will be made following the forthcoming national camp at Kakul.

PCB insiders have hinted that wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan is the frontrunner to assume the captaincy role in both white-ball formats.

"The selection committee and board is working on two or three things and the selectors will take decision on the captaincy after the training camp in Kakul," Naqvi told reporters here.

"The selection committee has to do some brainstorming and sit together and decide on the captain," Naqvi said, adding that his committee is in favour of continuity.

Following Pakistan's disappointing performance in the ODI World Cup in India, Shaheen was appointed as the T20I captain, replacing Babar Azam. This decision was made by the previous committee chaired by Zaka Ashraf, who also selected Shan Masood as the Test captain.

Shaheen's elevation to the national captaincy was influenced by his success as the captain of Lahore Qalandars, where he led the franchise to consecutive PSL titles.

However, Pakistan's poor showing in a five-match T20I series in New Zealand, where they suffered a 1-4 defeat, coupled with finishing last in the current edition of the PSL, has raised doubts about Shaheen's suitability as captain ahead of the T20 World Cup scheduled for June.
