  • The death toll from the capsized Virgo Transport 8 ferry in the Java Sea has risen to 64 after rescue teams recovered 11 additional bodies from inside the submerged wreck and nearby shorelines.
  • The search and rescue operation for a further 71 missing people, all of whom are presumed dead, has been extended by seven days following an official review.
  • The vessel was carrying 213 passengers and 30 crew members when it lost contact after departing Surabaya for Borneo island, with only 108 people rescued so far.
  • Authorities plan to salvage the ferry from a depth of approximately 30 metres, while recovered victims are being identified at a police hospital in Banjarmasin before being released to their families.
  • Maritime accidents remain frequent across Indonesia 's archipelago of over 17,000 islands, where ferries are a primary form of transport and safety enforcement is often weak.
