Death of mum and son who fell from Stena Line ferry being treated as murder

The death of a mum and son who died after falling from a Stena Line ferry is now being treated as a suspected murder-suicide. Police in Sweden are investigating the theory that the 36-year-old mum and seven-year-old boy died in an incident that was not accidental.

The mother and son have been named as Paulina and Lech, both from Grudziądzt in Poland. They were aboard the Stena Spirit ferry from Poland to the Sweden.

At first it was believed the boy had fallen into the water and the mum had jumped in to save him. The search and rescue operation on Friday included NATO assets.

The woman and boy were brought out of the water and airlifted to hospital but could not be saved.

According to Thomas Johansson from the Swedish Police, there were a number of circumstances described by the ferry crew and passengers, CCTV footage, and identification of the victims, that allowed them to treat it as a murder case.

Mr Johannson told Fakt: "I would like to emphasise that there is no suspect and we do not intend to charge anyone."
