A Perth man has been sentenced to six-and-a-half years in prison after sexually assaulting a jogger in Broome last year.
Dean Osborne, 53, was sentenced in Broome District Court on Monday after pleading guilty last year to three counts of aggravated sexual penetration without consent.
The court heard the electrician, who was on a contract working in the tourist town at the time, had been drinking with work mates the night before the offence, and had spent about $300 on alcohol before leaving the bar.
Defence lawyer Margot Perling said Osborne approached a group of women who offered him LSD, and he took the drug to "impress them".
She said Osborne remembered leaving the bar and trying to call a taxi, but was left to walk home, where he later fell asleep at a park for several hours.
Ms Perling said Osborne did not recall how he ended up at the park.
The court heard Osborne had woken up in the park and attempted to walk home, when he came across a female jogger.
The court heard she made space on the footpath to let him pass, but Osborne approached her and she fell into the bushes.
Osborne then fell on top her and sexually assaulted her.
Members of the public and residents of nearby houses heard the woman's screams, before Osborne left the scene on foot.
Osborne was later arrested, after shaving his beard in an attempt to conceal his identity.
Ms Perling told the court Osborne felt remorseful and he had "no idea why he did it".
She said he remembered seeing the victim and the "fear in her eyes and her screaming".
Narcissistic tendencies
The court also heard Osborne had two prior convictions, including indecent acts in a public place, from an incident in Perth in July 2019.
DNA matches were used to connect Osborne to the incident, as well as his possessions at the scene.
The court also heard a psychological assessment describing Osborne as having narcissistic tendencies and "anger and resentment toward women".
District Court judge Julie Wager said Osborne's actions had "caused irreparable damage" to the victim.
Osborne was sentenced to six-and-a-half years in jail, backdated to August 6 last year.
