Residents of a north Texas county are reeling after a devastating tornado tore through the remote region near the small community of Valley View, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. Cooke County Sheriff Ray Sappington reported that seven people lost their lives in the storm, including two young children aged 2 and 5. Tragically, three family members were found deceased in one residence.
The tornado was part of a series of powerful storms that swept through Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas over the weekend, claiming a total of 15 lives and leaving tens of thousands without power. In Valley View, a town with a population of barely 800, the impact was particularly severe.
Residents like Kevin Dorantes, 20, recounted harrowing experiences of seeking shelter and witnessing the devastation firsthand. Dorantes managed to guide his family to safety in a windowless bathroom, while some of his neighbors faced severe injuries and property damage.
Valley View Chief of Police Justin Stamps described the aftermath as both exhausting and heartbreaking, noting that the tight-knit agricultural community was struggling to come to terms with the disaster. Many displaced residents have sought refuge in makeshift shelters set up in local churches.
As the community grapples with the immense loss and destruction, volunteers and neighbors have rallied together to provide support. From salvaging belongings to assisting with repairs, the spirit of resilience and solidarity is evident among Valley View residents.
