What is a transfer deal sheet and how do they work?

Another transfer deadline day is upon us as clubs across the Premier League and beyond scramble to complete any last-minute summer business.

Should a signing need to be completed beyond the final hours of Deadline Day, it is mandatory that the clubs involved fill out what is known as a ‘deal sheet’.

Deadline Day live! All the latest transfer news and rumours

This is a form submitted to the Premier League - or the EFL - to ensure that the deal can proceed, with the sheet itself showing that an agreement has been reached between the clubs before the deadline.

It also gives the clubs more time to submit the relevant paperwork to get the transfer done.

This summer, with the window set to shut at 11pm BST today - Tuesday, September 1 - a deal sheet will be needed for any transfers that are likely to occur during the two-hour period between 9pm and 11pm.

The deal sheet - if filled out and filed properly - gives clubs two more hours to finalise all the remaining details. In the case of the summer transfer window, that will give clubs until 1am BST on Wednesday morning to get their business done.

Should all the relevant documents and paperwork not be submitted to the Premier League or EFL by then, the move will not be able to go ahead.

In January 2023, Enzo Fernandez’s £107million move from Benfica to Chelsea was successfully completed after the submitting of a deal sheet.

The Argentine could yet be the subject of another too as Manchester City aim to complete a blockbuster deal with Chelsea for the Argentine midfielder late on Deadline Day.
