A couple of years back, the Sacramento Kings began shooting a purple laser into the sky after games in which they won. Loved by the home fans and hated by opponents, it has become a symbol that is synonymous with the current version of the team, and has even become a part of the franchise’s identity.
De’Aaron Fox Talks About The Beam With Draymond Green
During an appearance on Draymond Green’s podcast, Kings star point guard De’Aaron Fox spoke about “Lighting The Beam”, it’s origins, and what it means to the city.
Green started off the topic by saying that he “hates that damn beam”. He referenced the times that he has played in Sacramento, and how he revels in the opportunity to make sure that the beam does not get lit. He said that during the epic playoff series between the Kings and Warriors in 2023, he would go back to the team hotel, which had a clear view of the purple symbol.
Then, Green went on to ask Fox about his personal history with the beam. The Kings’ guard said that the team learned about it for the first time when the rest of the world did, and thought that it might have been a temporary gimmick. But when the legend of the beam grew, so did the disdain from opposing players and fan bases, which ultimately made Sacramento want to keep it around for good.
The Beam can never leave.

The Kings haven’t seen the beam lit as much as they would have hoped so far this season. They have a losing record through the first 27 games of the season at 13-14, and have been sitting firmly in 12th place in the Western Conference for about two weeks now. There is still plenty of time for a turn around, but the team’s issues have been plentiful through the first two months of the season.
They’ll have a chance to right the ship in the coming weeks. 7 of their next 8 games will be played at home inside Golden 1 Center, including a back-to-back against the rival Lakers, who already defeated the Kings earlier this season. De’Aaron Fox ranks 9th in the NBA in points per game, and is 12th in steals after leading the league last season.
