DCU has cancelled a Royal Moscow Ballet performance of Swan Lake following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The Royal Moscow Ballet performance of Swan Lake was scheduled to take place in The Helix at Dublin City University tonight.
The Royal Moscow Ballet has been touring Ireland annually for over 10 years and is made up of people of different nationalities including Russians, Ukrainians, Belarussians, Uzbeks, Japanese, Irish and Polish cast and crew who have worked and lived together for years.
In a statement, a spokesperson for the university sad: "As a result of the truly shocking events that are unfolding in Ukraine, it is crucial that Dublin City University and all civilised countries takes all practical steps to stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine.
They also said it was important to "send an unambiguous message to the Russian Government that their deplorable actions have consequences that will have impact across political, economic, sporting and cultural spheres at all levels."
Russian missiles were fired at Ukrainian cities yesterday after Putin announced a "special military operation" was underway.
Ukraine's Foreign Minister described it as a "full-scale invasion" and said they will defend themselves in the war which they "will win".
Yesterday the entrance to the Russian Embassy in Dublin was doused in red paint during a protest against the Russian invasion on Ukraine.
There were as many as 20 protesters flying Ukraine flags at the Embassy on Orwell Road in Milltown when the red paint was thrown over the Russian emblem, a source told Dublin Live.
Taoiseach Micheal Martin has since told Vladimir Putin and his “henchmen” they will pay a high price for their “outrageous act of aggression”.
He said that Ireland would fully support sanctions imposed by the EU’s 27 prime ministers and presidents.
