Earlier this year, James Gunn revealed all the movies and TV shows that would be a part of the first chapter of his new relaunch of the DC cinematic universe, beginning with an animated series written by Gunn called Creature Commandos. This series is based on one of the weirder and more obscure comic book titles in the DC library (a specialty of Gunn’s) focusing on a team of monsters fighting in World War II.
We’ve known nothing specific about the series, or indeed any of the upcoming DC titles, but now the cast of Creature Commandos has been revealed and frankly, it’s pretty impressive. James Gunn is coming out swinging with his first project as the head of DC, and we’re ready to dive into this brave new DC universe.
Frank Grillo as Rick Flagg Sr.
Best known for his villainous turn in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Grillo will bring his tough-guy act to DC to play Rick Flagg Sr., a name that will be familiar to DC fans. Flagg Sr. is the father of Rick Flagg Jr., the character played by Joel Kinnaman in both Suicide Squad films.
David Harbour as Frankenstein
In another Marvel-to-DC crossover, Harbour will star as Frankenstein. Yes, that Frankenstein. The beloved public domain character created by Mary Shelley has a robust history in comic books and DC has featured the misunderstood monster battling Superman, Batman and even Nazis throughout the years.
Indira Varma as The Bride
British actress and Game of Thrones alum Indira Varma will feature as Frankenstein’s bride on the team, bringing some unexpected romance to the proceedings.
Alan Tudyk as Dr. Phosphorus
Gunn picks up one of Hollywood’s most versatile voice actors in Tudyk, who has voiced dozens of characters that you probably didn’t even realize had a voice actor behind them. Tudyk will play Dr. Phosphorus, a 1970s Batman villain who is essentially a walking nuclear meltdown.
Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana Rostovic
This Bulgarian actress burst onto the scene in 2020 after her performance as Borat’s daughter earned a surprise Oscar nomination. Bakalova, who also features in Gunn’s upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3, will voice an original character with no comic book history that we’re aware of.
Sean Gunn as Weasel and G.I. Robot
James Gunn’s brother Sean has been both a muse and a brilliant collaborator in his own right over the years, featuring in most of James’ projects. Sean will reprise his role as Suicide Squad member Weasel as well as voicing G.I. Robot, another bizarre and obscure pull from the DC universe. G.I. Robot first appeared in the early 1960s in a DC title called Star Spangled War Stories.
Zoe Chao as Dr. Nina Mazursky
One of the stars of last year’s ensemble comedy mystery The Afterparty, Chao will play Dr. Nina Mazurksy, a mad scientist who has turned herself into an amphibious creature that bears a striking resemblance to the Creature from the Black Lagoon.
And More...
The series will also feature comedian Steve Agee as John Economos and Academy Award-winner Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, both of whom have appeared in the Suicide Squad films as well as Gunn’s HBO series Peacemaker.
