They are the family who personify the great British tradition of the stiff upper lip.
But yesterday there was no hiding their raw emotions.
They had lost not only their Queen, but a mother and grandmother. The Royal Family did not let stoicism stand in the way of grief.
It was the face of King Charles III, that would have resonated the most with the public. After 10 long days of public mourning, the new monarch’s eyes were red-ringed.
His sister, the Princess Royal, looked on with concern.
At the funeral service at Westminster Abbey, the King was seen wiping away tears unashamedly.
Princes William and Harry, driven so far apart in recent months, were united by the emotion of the day as they followed their father behind the Queen’s coffin procession.
Prince Harry always had a special bond with his granny.
In a public statement this week he told the late Queen: “Thank you for your sound advice. Thank you for your infectious smile.”
Yesterday his pain was evident as he tipped his head and closed his eyes to grieve for the woman after whom he named his daughter, Lilibet.
It was the Queen’s nickname.
Beside him, wife Meghan openly shed tears for the woman who had welcomed her into her family.
As the new Prince of Wales walked in the procession, his wife Kate was driven to the Abbey with Camilla, Queen Consort, and the couple’s children George and Charlotte.
Pictured looking out of the window of her car, seemingly deep in reflection, Kate was poised and elegant wearing a choker that had once belonged to the Queen.
Two of the most visibly upset mourners during the funeral were the Queen’s youngest child Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, and his wife Sophie.
The Countess of Wessex made use of the tissues she had brought with her in her black handbag.
Prince Andrew, known to be especially close to his mother, looked particularly distraught.
During the procession he bit hard on his bottom lip, fighting back sobs.
